Policies on Technology

    • Cell Phones and Personal Devices

Lacordaire is a Phone-Free School.

In accordance with New Jersey’s bell-to-bell requirement, cell phones and personal communication devices may not be used on campus during the academic day, except as specifically permitted for Upper School students under Lacordaire's policy.

At Lacordaire, we believe a strong educational environment depends on personal responsibility, self-discipline, role modeling, and respect for others. Rather than collecting students’ phones at the start of each day, we trust students to follow these policies, exercise sound judgment in their use of technology, and model responsible behavior for their peers. This trust comes with accountability, and students who violate the policy will face appropriate disciplinary consequences.

Cell Phone & Personal Device Restrictions

Students may not use cell phones, smartwatches, or other personal communication devices on campus during the academic day, except as expressly permitted by this policy.

  • Middle School: The policy applies from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., including the time students wait for Morning Ceremony.
  • Upper School: The policy applies from 8:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., including Morning and Afternoon Homeroom.
Students in the Middle and Upper Schools may use their laptops in accordance with Lacordaire Academy’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. However, students may not use their laptops or other permitted devices to send or receive text messages or to communicate through messaging applications for personal purposes during the academic day.

This policy also applies to other personal devices and technologies used for communication, including Apple Watches, Google watches, smart glasses, Meta glasses, wireless earbuds, and similar devices.

Upper School Exceptions

Upper School students may use their cell phones only during the lunch period and only in the room where they are eating lunch. Cell phones are never permitted in hallways or bathrooms.

Juniors and seniors may also use their cell phones when they are off campus during lunch or a free period.
Contacting Your Student During School Hours

To promote an optimal learning environment and minimize distractions, parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to refrain from contacting students directly during the academic day. Parents and guardians who need to contact the school may call 973-744-1156.

Except in emergencies, students will receive phone messages during lunch and may return calls at that time. Students who need to contact a parent or guardian during the school day should do so through the Main Office or Office of Counseling and Wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions

List of 3 frequently asked questions.

  • What is your policy for students in grades Pre-K through 4?

The same restrictions on cell phones and personal communication devices apply to Lower School students during the academic day. Given the age of our Lower School students, personal device use is generally not applicable.
  • What are the consequences if a student is discovered to be using her/his cell phone or personal device?

When a student violates the policy, the device will be confiscated, the infraction will be documented in Blackbaud, our school's parent and student portal, and the student’s parent or guardian will be notified.

The first offense results in confiscation of the device, which is returned at the end of the school day, and email notification to the student’s parent or guardian. A second offense results in device confiscation, parent or guardian notification, and an after school detention. A third offense results in device confiscation and a meeting with the student’s parent or guardian and the Dean of Student Affairs to discuss further disciplinary action. Following a third offense, the student must turn in the device to the Dean of Student Affairs by 8:00 a.m. each school day and may retrieve it at 3:15 p.m.

  • What happens if a student repeatedly does not comply with the policy?

Repeated failure to comply with this policy may result in serious disciplinary action, including withdrawal of the invitation to return to school.
